Is Newgrounds Down Right Now?
No, Newgrounds is not down right now. The site is loading normally, and games, movies, audio, and art pages are working. If you just hit an error page, check the live newgrounds status chart above, because the site does have its rough moments.
When Newgrounds itself fails, visitors see its famous standby message: Newgrounds is down, Please standby. That page means the trouble is on the site servers, usually overload or maintenance, and no amount of refreshing on your end will fix it faster. Founded by Tom Fulp, the portal has run for decades as a home for independent games and animation, and the other big historical break was Adobe killing Flash at the end of 2020, which stranded years of classic Flash content. A newgrounds outage today is far more likely to be server strain than anything on your computer.
Is Newgrounds Down for Me or Everyone?
If the site opens for others but not for you, the trouble is on your end. Try a different browser, clear your cache and cookies, or switch from WiFi to mobile data. If it fails everywhere and other people report the same problem, it is a real outage affecting everyone.
What Does Newgrounds Is Down, Please Standby Mean?
It is the site own error page, shown when its servers cannot serve you. Past incidents left users completely unable to reach the portal, with people reporting they were literally downloading art when the servers went dark. There is no workaround and no estimated time on the page itself. Your only move is to wait and check back later, and watch the site social accounts for updates if the downtime stretches on.
Do not confuse this with a local problem. If you see the standby message, the site is down for everyone hitting it. If instead pages half load or only videos fail, the issue is more likely your browser or connection, and the fixes below apply.
Why Are Newgrounds Videos Not Playing?
Video playback failures usually come from the browser, not the site. Extensions are the top suspect: disable them one by one and test after each, since ad and privacy blockers love to break video players. Next, clear cache, cookies, and browsing history, and try toggling hardware acceleration in your browser settings. A weak or unstable connection also causes endless buffering, so run a speed test and restart your router if the numbers look bad.
What Happened to the Old Flash Games?
Adobe ended Flash on December 31, 2020, and the Newgrounds Player depended on it. After the kill switch, many users lost the ability to play games entirely, while some could still watch videos. Workarounds exist but are fiddly and unreliable, and the real path forward has been creators re releasing classics in modern formats. If a specific old game will not run, it is almost certainly a Flash casualty rather than a current outage.
Why Is My Security Software Blocking Newgrounds?
Some DNS based filters flag parts of the site. Users behind Norton ConnectSafe found games refusing to load with no visible warning, because the filter blocked file requests silently. Switching the computer to a different DNS fixed it immediately. If games load on your phone data but not on home WiFi, your router level filtering is the prime suspect.
Common Newgrounds Problems and Fixes
Site Shows Please Standby
Wait it out. This is a server side message and only the Newgrounds team can resolve it. Check back in a while instead of hammering refresh.
Videos Buffer or Fail
Disable browser extensions one by one, clear cache and history, and toggle hardware acceleration. Confirm your connection is stable with a speed test.
Games Will Not Start
Try a different browser and check whether your DNS filtering blocks the game files. Old Flash titles may simply be unplayable since Flash died.
Pages Half Load
Clear cookies and cache, disable extensions, and try another browser. If the problem follows you across browsers, check the status chart for a site issue.
Cannot Log In
Clear site cookies and try an incognito window. If login fails everywhere during a standby message, the servers are down and you just have to wait.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens when a Newgrounds submission gets blammed?
New uploads go through a judgment period where members vote on them. Submissions with very low scores are removed automatically. Share your work in the forums first, fix the weak points, and submit a stronger version.
What does please standby mean?
It is the site server error page. It means Newgrounds itself is down for maintenance or overload, and waiting is the only fix.
Why won’t videos play?
Browser extensions, bad cache, hardware acceleration, or a weak connection cause most playback failures. Disable extensions one by one and clear your cache.
Can I still play old Flash games?
Mostly no. Adobe killed Flash at the end of 2020, breaking the old player. Some classics have been re released in modern formats.
Why is my security software blocking the site?
DNS filters like Norton ConnectSafe have flagged parts of the site. Switching to a different DNS usually fixes game loading.
How do I get my first audio upload to appear on Newgrounds?
New audio artists are approved before their tracks show in the Audio Portal. A moderator or a scouted artist must approve your first submissions. Submit one of your best tracks and wait for approval instead of uploading it again.
