Is Hey down? User reports show no current problems with Hey
HEY is an email service from 37signals, the company behind Basecamp, built around the Imbox, the Screener, and focused feeds for newsletters and receipts. It rethinks email with screening, bundling, and privacy protection built in.

Is HEY Down Right Now?
No, HEY is not down for everyone right now. The HEY status looks normal, and most reports today are about missing mail. In HEY, missing mail is often not an outage at all. It is the Screener doing its job, holding new senders back until you approve them.
HEY sorts your mail into the Imbox, The Feed, and Paper Trail, and it screens first-time senders. That design confuses new users during their first weeks. This page tracks real HEY outage reports, so you can separate a true failure from the app working as designed.
Is HEY Down for Me or Everyone?
To test if HEY is down for me or everyone, send yourself a message from a sender you already approved. If it lands fast, HEY is working and your missing mail is a screening or sorting issue. If nothing arrives, the app will not load, and reports here spike at the same hour, then it may be a shared problem worth waiting out.
The Screener: Where ‘Missing’ Email Really Is
Every first-time sender lands in the Screener, not your Imbox. Their mail waits there until you say yes or no. Users waiting for a password reset or a bank code often think HEY lost the message, when it is sitting in the Screener the whole time.
Check the Screener whenever an expected email does not arrive. Approve the sender once and their future mail flows straight in. Say no, and that sender is blocked for good. This single feature explains most ‘HEY is not receiving emails’ reports.
Mail Landing in The Feed or Paper Trail
HEY files newsletters into The Feed and receipts into Paper Trail. Sometimes a message you wanted in the Imbox gets sorted away. It is not lost, just filed where you did not think to look.
You can move a sender between places at any time. Open a message from that sender and choose where their mail should go. Fixing the sender’s home once fixes every future message from them, so it is worth the ten seconds.
Why HEY Does Not Work Like Normal Email Apps
HEY is a closed system by design. It does not offer standard IMAP access for outside mail apps the way most providers do. People who try to add HEY to a generic mail client hit a wall and assume the service is broken.
Use the official HEY apps or the web app instead. If you need your mail inside another tool, set up forwarding for the senders that matter.
Common HEY Problems and Fixes
Expected Email Never Arrived
Check the Screener first, because new senders wait there for approval. Then search The Feed and Paper Trail. If the mail is truly absent, ask the sender whether it bounced.
Cannot Log In to HEY
Confirm you are using the email address tied to the account and the right password. Try the web app to rule out a mobile app problem. If sign-in fails on every device while reports here spike, wait, because it may be a service-side issue.
Notifications Not Arriving
HEY only notifies for Imbox mail by design, so Feed mail stays quiet. Check your phone’s notification settings for the app too. If Imbox notifications stopped entirely, toggle them off and back on inside HEY settings.
Mail Goes to the Wrong Place
Open any message from that sender and change where their mail is filed. HEY remembers per sender, not per message. One fix corrects all future mail from them. Check The Feed and Paper Trail before reporting mail as lost.
Cannot Send Email
Check whether the message is stuck in your outbox or drafts. A weak connection can hold a send. Restart the app and send again on a stable network. If sends fail for every message while reports climb here, it may be a wider problem.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why am I not receiving emails in HEY?
The sender is probably waiting in the Screener. HEY holds every first-time sender there until you approve them. Approve the sender and the message appears, with future mail flowing straight to your Imbox.
Why did my email go to The Feed instead of the Imbox?
HEY files newsletters and bulk mail into The Feed by design. If a sender landed there by mistake, open the message and change where that sender’s mail goes.
Why can’t I log in to HEY?
Double-check the account email and password, then try the web app to rule out a device problem.
Why aren’t HEY notifications working?
HEY only sends notifications for Imbox mail, not for The Feed or Paper Trail. Check that setting first. Then confirm your phone allows notifications for the HEY app.
Can I use HEY in Outlook or Apple Mail?
HEY is designed as its own app and does not offer standard IMAP access like typical providers. Use the official HEY app or web version. If you truly need mail elsewhere, forward selected senders to another address instead.
How do I check if HEY is down?
Use the live reports at the top of this page, then run the self-test: email yourself from an approved sender. If that lands quickly, HEY is up and your issue is screening or sorting.
