I was scurrying to fix the PHP stuff this morning and then got hit with the GitLab vulnerability in the afternoon. You know what? It’s fine. I took the GitLab down and it’s going to be down until I fix it. Might take a d

Is GitLab Down Right Now?

No, GitLab is not down right now. GitLab.com is responding normally and the API, web interface, and CI/CD pipelines are working. If your GitLab status looks broken, check whether the problem is limited to your project or network before assuming a full outage.

GitLab had a rough day on October 16, 2026, with two separate incidents: a CI/CD failure in the morning and 503 errors across the site in the afternoon. Both were resolved the same day. The live GitLab status indicator at the top of this page shows current health.

Is GitLab Down for Me or Everyone?

If gitlab.com loads but your pipelines fail, the issue is likely with runners or your project config, not a GitLab outage. If the whole site returns 503 errors for you and for colleagues in other locations, check the official status page for an active incident.

Why Did My GitLab Pipeline Fail With a Gitaly Timeout?

On October 16, 2026, GitLab.com pipelines failed with the error “CI configuration fetch from Gitaly timed out.” Your YAML file was fine. The problem was on GitLab side: the Gitaly service that stores repositories was slow, so the pipeline runner could never read your config.

When you see this error, do not rewrite your pipeline file. Check the GitLab status page first. If an incident is active, wait for the fix and then retry the pipeline. Retrying during the incident just adds load.

Why Is GitLab Showing 503 Errors?

In the same October 2026 incident window, users saw 503 errors across the website, the API, Git operations, both container registries, Pages, and hosted runners on Linux, Windows, and macOS. The site also moved very slowly. This kind of wide failure points to infrastructure trouble, not your account.

During 503 waves, avoid pushing large changes or triggering heavy pipelines. Wait until the status page marks the incident resolved, then verify your recent pushes landed correctly.

Why Are My CI Jobs Stuck or Delayed?

GitLab has repeatedly seen delays on its shared SaaS runners, especially the small Linux runners. Jobs sit in “pending” or “created” state for a long time. This is usually runner pool exhaustion during busy periods, and it has recurred several times in October 2026.

If your jobs are stuck, check the status page for runner incidents. As a workaround, teams with their own runners can switch jobs to self-hosted runners. Do not cancel and resubmit in a loop, since that makes the queue longer.

Common GitLab Problems and Fixes

Pipeline Fails Immediately

Read the error message carefully. A Gitaly timeout means a GitLab-side incident, so check the status page and retry later. A YAML error means your config has a real problem to fix.

503 Errors on the Website

Wait for the incident to be marked resolved on the status page. Do not repeatedly refresh, which adds load. Verify your work after recovery since some actions may not have saved.

Jobs Stuck in Pending

Check for runner incidents on the status page. If you have self-hosted runners, route jobs there temporarily. Avoid resubmitting the same job many times.

Slow Web Interface

Interface slowness often comes with the same incidents that break CI. Try a hard refresh. If only one project is slow, the issue may be a huge repository or pipeline list on that project.

Git Push or Pull Fails

Test with a small fetch first. If authentication fails, renew your personal access token. During incidents, wait for resolution rather than retrying constantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get back into GitLab after being locked out by two-factor authentication?

GitLab locks accounts after repeated failed two-factor attempts, and codes fail when your phone clock is out of sync. Turn on automatic time in your phone settings, then try a fresh code. If you are still locked out, use one of your saved recovery codes.

Why did my GitLab pipeline fail with a Gitaly timeout?

That error appeared during the October 16, 2026 incident when the Gitaly storage service was slow. Your config was fine. Retry after the incident is marked resolved.

What do 503 errors on GitLab mean?

503 errors across the site usually signal a GitLab infrastructure incident affecting the website, API, and runners at once. Check the status page and wait.

Why are my CI jobs stuck pending?

Shared runner pools get exhausted during busy periods. Check for runner incidents, or temporarily use self-hosted runners if you have them.

Is GitLab Duo affected by outages?

GitLab Duo features have had their own incidents, including slow or missing code review results. They usually recover with the main platform.

Can I push directly to the main branch on GitLab?

No, the main branch is protected by default on many projects, so direct pushes are blocked for most roles. Create a feature branch and push your changes there instead. Then open a merge request to add them to main.
