Is Insomnia Down Right Now?
When your API client stops working, the first question is usually: is Insomnia down? The app itself runs on your computer and sends requests directly to your own servers, so the company has no traffic to lose.
What can fail are its online services: account sign in, cloud sync, and the update server. This page tracks the Insomnia status and the real problems developers report. That helps you separate an Insomnia outage from a bug in your own API.
Is Insomnia Down for Me or Everyone?
Test a request to a public test API first. If that answers, the app works and the problem sits with your own API server. If sign in or sync fails while requests work fine, the company services are the issue. When developers ask is Insomnia down for me, a company proxy or VPN blocking the account endpoints is a frequent answer.
Why Do My API Requests Time Out?
Timeouts almost always mean the target API is slow or unreachable, not the client. Check the API server logs and try the same request from a terminal tool to compare.
TLS settings on the client cause the other common failures. A wrong TLS version setting or a rejected self signed certificate makes secure requests fail before they start.
Why Won’t My Workspaces Sync?
Sync needs a valid signed in session. Token expiry stops sync quietly, so collections stop updating across machines while everything else keeps working.
A blocked sync endpoint gives the same result. Many office firewalls block cloud domains, and the app reports a generic network error without naming the blocked address.
Why Does the App Crash on Startup?
Broken local storage files crash the client before any window opens. Deleting the stored data folder forces a fresh state, and your collections return from sync or local backup.
Outdated community plugins also crash newer builds. Disabling plugins at startup, or moving them out of the plugin folder, shows quickly whether one of them is the cause.
Common Insomnia Problems and Fixes
Fix Request Timeouts
Test the API from the command line with curl to see if the server is slow. Raise the request timeout in preferences for heavy endpoints. Check TLS settings and accept only the certificates your team trusts.
Restart Sync With Your Account
Sign out of your Kong account inside the app and sign back in. Confirm sync endpoints are not blocked by your firewall. Create a fresh workspace on one machine and watch whether it appears on the other.
Recover After a Startup Crash
Close the app fully, rename the stored data folder so a new one is created, and start again. Sign back in to pull collections from sync, or restore them from your last local backup export.
Disable a Crashing Plugin
Start with plugins disabled and enable them one by one. Remove any plugin that crashes the client. Report it to the plugin author so a fixed version can come out.
Fix SSL Certificate Errors
If you test a local API with a self signed certificate, turn off certificate validation for that workspace only. Never disable it globally, because real APIs need the check for security.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Insomnia say unable to verify the first certificate?
The server chain is incomplete or your machine does not trust the certificate authority. Point the request to the full chain or install the CA on your system. For local testing you can disable validation on that workspace only.
How do I use environment variables in Insomnia?
Create an environment in the workspace, add key value pairs, and reference them with double curly braces in the URL or headers. Switch environments from the top bar to change targets without editing requests.
Why is my request slower in Insomnia than in the browser?
The client may show full timing including TLS handshake and redirects, while the browser shows cached results. Check the timeline view to see which step is slow, often DNS or the server itself.
Does Insomnia work without an account?
Yes, you can build and send requests without signing in. An account is only needed for cloud sync, team workspaces, and some collaboration features. Local collections stay on your machine.
How do I export my collections as backup?
Right click a workspace or collection and choose export. Save the file outside the app data folder. This backup restores your work if sync fails or you move to a new computer.
What is the difference between Insomnia and Postman?
Both test APIs, but Insomnia is the Kong client with a simpler interface and strong GraphQL support. Teams that already use Kong Gateway often pick it because of the shared account and sync model.
